Thread veins are small, red (and sometimes purple) veins which appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose and legs. They are also known as spider veins and broken veins – although they are not actually broken. Dr McManners is an expert in treating these harmless but unsightly veins with advanced intense pulsed light (IPL) laser treatment.
IPL laser treatment is a non-invasive alternative to microscelorotherapy that targets facial thread veins. At Dr McManners clinic, we use laser technology as it’s renowned for its efficacy and safety while providing a comfortable patient experience. The laser’s pulses direct energy into the blood and vessel walls where it’s absorbed by the haemoglobin present. The heat causes the vessel to coagulate and constrict until it breaks down. Eventually, the vein disintegrates and is no longer visible.*
This treatment doesn’t affect the skin’s surface as the laser energy travels straights through the epidermis. There are no incisions or downtime and most of our patients find the procedure virtually pain free.*

This minimally-invasive treatment uses IPL to deliver energy into the blood and vessel walls. The energy is absorbed by haemoglobin (a red protein which transports oxygen in the blood). As this process occurs, heat is generated causing the thread vein to coagulate and constrict until it breaks down. Although the vein may darken initially, it should fade and disappear over time.*
The procedure is carried out by Dr McManners. Laser light is delivered to the thread veins within the treatment area using a hand-held device.
The treatment works particularly well for fairer skin tones. Pigmentation damage in darker skin tones can occur so we will advise on this in full during your consultation.*
This will depend on the number of thread veins and your skin tone. We’ll assess these factors during your consultation and recommend a specific number of treatments. We can adapt and tailor this plan as your treatment progresses.
Most of our patients find the treatment completely manageable. It is considered more comfortable than alternative procedures such as microsclerotherapy.*
